Master's Program Application Guide

policy2026/07/02

China's university master's programs are open to international students worldwide, cultivating high-level talents with professional knowledge, research capabilities, and an international perspective.

Upon completion of the study program and successful defense of their thesis, international students can obtain a master's degree certificate and a master's degree.

I. Program Introduction

The standard duration of master's programs is generally 2–3 years, though some professional degrees may vary according to the curriculum.

Programs cover fields such as science and engineering, medicine, economics, management, education, law, humanities, and arts, with instruction offered in both Chinese and English.

An increasing number of universities have established fully English-taught master's programs, providing learning opportunities for international students without a foundation in Chinese.

II. Application Requirements

Generally, applicants for master's programs must:

  • Hold a valid foreign passport;
  • Be in good health;
  • Have obtained a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification;
  • Meet the language requirements specified by the university;
  • Demonstrate strong academic performance and research potential;
  • Certain programs require relevant educational background.

Some universities also require applicants to contact their prospective supervisors in advance and secure their acceptance.

III. Application Process

Applicants first select a university and program, confirming the supervisor's availability to accept new students.

They then submit required documents—such as academic certificates, transcripts, and a research proposal—through the university's international student application platform.

The university conducts eligibility reviews, and some programs arrange online interviews or comprehensive assessments.

Upon approval, the university issues an admission letter along with the JW201/JW202 form; applicants proceed to apply for a student visa and enroll on time.

IV. Application Materials

Typically include:

  • Passport;
  • Bachelor's degree certificate and graduation certificate;
  • Undergraduate transcript;
  • Two letters of recommendation from experts;
  • Research proposal;
  • Proof of language proficiency;
  • Personal resume;
  • Medical examination certificate;
  • Criminal record clearance (required by some institutions);
  • Financial proof.

Some universities also request submission of research achievements, papers, or portfolios.

V. Important Notes

The research proposal is a crucial document in the master's application process, emphasizing the research topic, objectives, and future plans.

When applying for the Chinese Government Scholarship or local government scholarships, note that scholarship application deadlines usually precede university admission deadlines.

After completing studies, applicants may pursue doctoral programs or, in accordance with relevant regulations, seek employment in China.
