Application Guide for Port Visa to China

policy2026/06/08
I. What is a Port Visa?

A port visa refers to an entry visa issued on-site by the port visa authority upon arrival at a designated international port of entry in China.

It should be noted that not all foreigners are eligible for a port visa; it is intended for individuals with urgent entry needs who cannot obtain a visa in advance from Chinese embassies or consulates abroad.

II. Applicable Situations

These typically include:

  • Urgent business activities or commercial cooperation;

  • Visiting exchanges and investment/entrepreneurial activities;

  • Visiting relatives or handling personal matters;

  • Humanitarian reasons such as attending funerals or visiting critically ill patients;

  • Emergency work assignments such as emergency repairs;

  • Approved group tourism activities entering the country.

III. Application Materials

Generally, applicants for a port visa need to provide:

  • A valid passport or international travel document;

  • Recent passport-sized photographs;

  • A port visa application form;

  • An invitation letter or relevant supporting documents;

  • Supporting documentation related to the purpose of entry.

The specific material requirements may vary depending on the purpose of entry.

IV. Application Process

Step 1: Pre-Submission (Recommended)

Applicants or inviting entities can submit application materials to the port visa authority at the intended port of entry prior to arrival in China.

Upon preliminary approval, they will receive a notice of acceptance, which helps increase the likelihood of successful entry.

Step 2: Arrival at Designated Port

Applicants arrive at international airports, seaports, or border inspection ports authorized to issue port visas.

Step 3: Submission of Application Materials

Submit your passport, application form, photos, and relevant supporting documents to the port visa authority, and undergo any necessary inquiries.

Step 4: Review and Payment

The port visa authority reviews the submitted materials and, upon approval, collects the visa fee as required.

Step 5: Obtain Visa and Enter the Country

After approval, you can collect your port visa and proceed with immigration procedures.

V. Important Notes

1. Port visas are special facilitation measures and do not guarantee approval for all applicants.

2. It is recommended to pre-submit your application to the intended port of entry rather than applying directly upon arrival.

3. Individual port visas are usually single-entry, with a typical stay period not exceeding 30 days.

4. Holders of port visas are generally required to enter through the port where the visa was issued.

5. If you qualify for visa exemption policies, the 240-hour transit visa-free policy, or already hold a valid Chinese visa, you generally do not need to apply for a port visa.
