policy2026/07/02

Doctoral education is the highest level of academic education in China's higher education system, focusing on cultivating high-level talents with independent research capabilities and innovative abilities.

International students can apply for doctoral programs taught in Chinese or English and obtain a doctoral degree upon graduation.

I. Program Introduction

The standard duration of a doctoral program is generally four years, with some majors allowed to extend the study period as appropriate based on training needs.

The available disciplines cover multiple fields, including natural sciences, engineering technology, medicine, agriculture, humanities and social sciences, and arts.

Doctoral training centers on scientific research, requiring students to complete research projects under the guidance of their supervisors, publish research findings, and successfully defend their doctoral dissertations.

II. Application Requirements

Applicants for doctoral programs typically need to meet the following conditions:

  • Hold a valid foreign passport;
  • Be in good health;
  • Have already obtained a master’s degree;
  • Meet the university’s language requirements;
  • Possess strong research capabilities;
  • Secure an acceptance letter from a prospective supervisor (required by most universities).

Some universities also require applicants to have certain research achievements or published academic papers.

III. Application Process

First, identify your research direction and select a supervisor, then discuss your research plan with them.

Submit application materials through the university’s international student admissions system.

The university will organize document review, supervisor evaluation, and a comprehensive interview.

Upon admission, the university will issue an admission notice and JW201/JW202 forms; applicants should then apply for an X1 visa and register on time.

IV. Application Materials

Typically, the following documents are required:

  • A valid passport;
  • Master’s degree certificate and diploma;
  • Master’s transcript;
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors;
  • A doctoral research proposal;
  • Proof of language proficiency;
  • Research achievements or published papers;
  • A personal resume;
  • A medical examination certificate;
  • Proof of financial resources.

Different universities may have varying requirements regarding research achievements; applicants should carefully read the relevant admission prospectus.

V. Important Notes

Doctoral applications place greater emphasis on research capability and supervisor compatibility. It is recommended to contact potential supervisors six months to one year in advance, thoroughly refine your research plan, and increase your chances of admission.

After enrollment, students must follow the training plan, completing coursework, mid-term assessments, research training, and dissertation defense. Upon graduation, they may continue research, teach at universities, or join corporate R&D institutions.

The above information is compiled based on relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education and international student admission policies of various universities. Specific application requirements shall be subject to the official announcements of the respective institutions.
