Application Guide for Foundation Courses

policy2026/07/03

The preparatory program is a bridging education project designed for international students who plan to pursue undergraduate or master's degrees at Chinese universities but do not yet meet the language or academic requirements.

Through preparatory study, students can further enhance their Chinese language proficiency, professional foundation, and cross-cultural adaptability, preparing them for formal degree studies.

I. Program Introduction

The duration of the preparatory course is generally six months to one year, primarily including intensive Chinese language courses, mathematics, physics, basic economics, an overview of China, and foundational professional courses.

Different universities set corresponding training content based on their fields of study. Upon completion of the preparatory program and meeting the university’s requirements, students may proceed to the undergraduate or master’s level.

Some universities undertake the task of training preparatory students under the Chinese Government Scholarship, providing unified instruction for scholarship recipients whose language proficiency does not yet meet the standards.

II. Application Requirements

To apply for a preparatory program, applicants usually need to meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid foreign passport;
  • Be in good health;
  • Have completed the relevant level of education;
  • Meet the basic admission requirements of the target institution;
  • Possess a certain level of academic ability and financial support.

Most preparatory programs have relatively low Chinese language proficiency requirements, and some English-taught programs accept applicants with no prior Chinese language background.

III. Application Process

Applicants select universities offering preparatory programs and confirm the chosen field of study and subsequent progression policies.

Submit application materials such as passport, educational certificates, and transcripts.

After review, the university issues an admission notice and visa application documents.

Applicants obtain a student visa, complete registration upon arrival, and take the entrance examination.

Upon successful completion of the preparatory program, students enter the corresponding degree program based on the university’s assessment results; some institutions require an additional professional examination.

IV. Application Materials

Typically include:

  • A valid passport;
  • Educational certificates;
  • Academic transcripts;
  • A personal statement;
  • Proof of language proficiency (if applicable);
  • A medical examination certificate;
  • Proof of financial resources;
  • Other materials required by the university.

V. Important Notes

Before applying, verify whether the preparatory program offers direct progression to undergraduate or master’s programs, as different universities have varying training models and admission requirements.

Completion of the preparatory program does not guarantee automatic admission; students must still meet the university’s specified language scores, course grades, and overall assessment criteria.

It is advisable to understand the official admission requirements for the intended major in advance and plan your study schedule accordingly.
