Application Guide for Junior College (Junior College) Programs

Immigration Guide Article2026/07/02

Specialist education in China is an important component of Chinese higher education, offered by approved higher vocational colleges and junior colleges that recruit international students.

After completing the curriculum and meeting graduation requirements, international students can obtain a specialist diploma issued by the institution.

According to the Measures for the Administration of the Admission and Education of International Students in Schools, international students may apply to pursue specialist, undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and other degree programs in China.

I. Program Overview

The standard duration of specialist education is three years, with some programs adjusted based on specific training needs.

Programs cover various fields such as intelligent manufacturing, information technology, e-commerce, international trade, nursing, hotel management, tourism management, art design, preschool education, and more. These programs emphasize vocational skills development and practical competence, making them ideal for international students who wish to quickly acquire professional skills and enter the job market.

II. Application Requirements

Applicants generally need to meet the following basic conditions:

  • Hold a valid foreign passport;
  • Be in good physical and mental health, with no criminal record;
  • Possess academic qualifications equivalent to a Chinese high school diploma;
  • Meet the language proficiency requirements specified by the applying institution. For Chinese-taught programs, HSK scores are typically required; for English-taught programs, applicants usually need to demonstrate corresponding English proficiency;
  • Have sufficient financial resources to cover tuition and living expenses.

Admission requirements may vary among institutions and programs. Please refer to the official admission brochure of each school for details.

III. Application Process

Step 1: Select institutions and programs qualified to admit international students, and review their admission brochures.

Step 2: Complete the online application form and submit supporting documents, including passport, academic certificates, transcripts, and proof of language proficiency.

Step 3: The institution will review the submitted materials. Some programs may arrange an online interview or entrance test.

Step 4: Upon approval, the institution will issue documents such as the admission letter and the Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Entering China (JW202/JW201).

Step 5: With the admission materials, applicants should apply for an X1 or X2 student visa and register at the institution within the designated timeframe.

IV. Required Documents

Most institutions typically require submission of:

  • A copy of the passport’s personal information page;
  • A high school diploma or equivalent qualification certificate;
  • Official transcripts;
  • Proof of language proficiency (e.g., HSK, IELTS, TOEFL);
  • A medical examination certificate (required by some institutions);
  • A certificate of no criminal record (required by some institutions);
  • Proof of financial support;
  • A personal statement and any additional documents requested by the institution.

V. Important Notes After Enrollment

International students must complete registration according to institutional regulations and legally obtain a residence permit.

Students entering China with an X1 visa should apply for a study-type residence permit within the prescribed period after arrival. During their studies, they must abide by both institutional rules and Chinese laws and regulations, fulfilling coursework and practical training as required.

Upon graduation, if eligible for further studies, students may apply to transfer to an undergraduate or higher-level program. Those meeting relevant policy criteria may also apply for employment or continue residing in China based on individual circumstances.

VI. Helpful Tips

It is recommended to prepare application materials 6–12 months in advance and pay close attention to the admission schedules and scholarship opportunities of target institutions.

Before applying, carefully read the international student admission brochure of the chosen institution to confirm program offerings, language requirements, tuition fees, and scholarship policies, so as to avoid affecting admission due to incomplete materials or failure to meet eligibility criteria.

All admission requirements are ultimately subject to the information published by the admitting institution.
