Undergraduate Program Application Guide

Immigration Guide Article2026/07/02

Undergraduate education in China is one of the most popular academic programs among international students, offered by regular institutions of higher learning authorized to enroll international students.

Upon completion of the curriculum and fulfillment of graduation requirements, students can obtain an undergraduate diploma and a bachelor's degree (if they meet the conditions for degree conferral).

According to the Measures for the Administration of the Admission and Education of International Students, universities may legally recruit foreign students for undergraduate programs.

I. Program Overview

The standard duration of undergraduate study is generally four years, with some majors such as medicine and architecture lasting five to six years.

Programs offered cover multiple disciplines, including engineering, science, economics, management, literature, medicine, law, and the arts.

Courses are taught in Chinese or English, and international students can choose programs based on their language proficiency. After graduation, they may apply for master’s programs or seek employment or start businesses in accordance with relevant Chinese regulations.

II. Application Requirements

Applicants for undergraduate programs typically need to meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid foreign passport;
  • Be in good health and of good moral character;
  • Possess educational qualifications equivalent to a Chinese high school diploma;
  • For Chinese-taught programs, applicants usually need to achieve HSK Level 4 or Level 5 (requirements vary by institution); for English-taught programs, proof of English proficiency is generally required;
  • Demonstrate sufficient financial capacity to cover tuition and living expenses, or have secured scholarship funding.

Certain majors (such as medicine and art) may also require interviews, portfolios, or specialized tests.

III. Application Process

Applicants first select their target university and major, review the international student admissions brochure, and confirm application requirements and deadlines.

They then submit applications through the university’s international student admissions system, uploading documents such as passports, academic certificates, transcripts, and language proficiency scores.

After reviewing the materials, some programs may arrange online interviews or entrance examinations. Upon approval, the university issues an admission letter along with JW201/JW202 visa application documents.

With these admission materials, applicants apply for a student visa at Chinese embassies or consulates abroad. Upon arrival, they complete registration as required by the university and apply for a residence permit for study purposes.

IV. Required Documents

Typical undergraduate applications require preparation of:

  • A valid passport;
  • A high school diploma or pre-graduation certificate;
  • High school transcripts;
  • Proof of Chinese or English language proficiency;
  • A personal statement;
  • Letters of recommendation (required by some institutions);
  • A medical examination certificate;
  • A criminal record check (required by some institutions);
  • Proof of financial resources and other documents as specified by the institution.

All foreign-language documents generally need to be accompanied by certified or notarized Chinese or English translations.

V. Important Notes

It is recommended to begin preparing applications at least one year in advance, especially for language exams, academic credential verification, and scholarship applications.

During the application process, ensure all submitted materials are genuine and valid; if false information is provided, the university reserves the right to revoke admission.

After enrollment, students must attend new student orientation, purchase medical insurance, apply for a residence permit, and comply with university regulations.

Graduates who meet the requirements may continue their studies at the master’s level.
