Immigration Guide Article2026/06/08
I. What is a Study-Type Residence Permit?

A study-type residence permit is a residence document issued by China’s public security authorities’ immigration administration to foreigners who are pursuing long-term studies in China.

After obtaining a study-type residence permit, the holder may:

  • Legally study and reside in China;

  • Enter and exit China multiple times within the validity period of the permit;

  • Handle daily life matters such as accommodation registration, opening bank accounts, and accessing communication services;

  • Apply for off-campus internships or similar activities in accordance with regulations (subject to approval).

It should be noted that a study-type residence permit does not constitute a work permit, and the holder must not engage in employment activities without authorization.

II. Eligible Applicants

Primarily applicable to:

  • Foreign students who entered China on an X1 visa;

  • Foreigners whose study period in China exceeds 180 days;

  • Foreigners approved to pursue academic education or long-term training programs in China.

Generally, individuals holding an X2 short-term study visa (with a study duration not exceeding 180 days) are not required to apply for a study-type residence permit.

III. Application Requirements

Applicants generally need to meet the following conditions:

  • Have been admitted to a legitimate educational institution in China;

  • Hold a valid X1 visa upon entry;

  • Complete school enrollment and registration procedures;

  • Have completed accommodation registration;

  • Comply with relevant Chinese immigration management regulations.

IV. Required Documents

The following documents are typically required:

  • Valid passport;

  • X1 visa and entry record;

  • “Application Form for Visa and Residence Permit for Foreigners”;

  • Recent passport-sized photograph;

  • Accommodation registration certificate for foreign nationals;

  • Admission letter or student status certificate issued by the school;

  • Proof of study materials issued by the school;

  • Health certificate (may be required for first-time applicants in some regions);

  • Other materials as requested by the immigration authorities.

Specific requirements may vary depending on the region and type of institution.

V. Application Process

Step 1: Obtain Admission Qualification

Applicants receive an admission letter from a Chinese school and obtain the necessary materials for applying for a study visa.

Step 2: Apply for and Enter with an X1 Visa

Apply for an X1 visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad and enter China within the visa’s validity period.

Step 3: Complete Enrollment and Registration

Follow the school’s requirements to complete new-student enrollment, registration, and academic record filing.

Step 4: Complete Accommodation Registration

Upon arrival, complete accommodation registration in accordance with the law.

  • For hotel stays, the hotel will handle the registration;

  • For off-campus rentals or stays at relatives’ or friends’ homes, register at the local police station.

Step 5: Submit Application for a Study-Type Residence Permit

Generally, within 30 days of entry, either the applicant or the school assists in submitting the application to the public security authorities’ immigration administration.

Step 6: Receive the Study-Type Residence Permit

Upon approval, the public security authorities will issue the study-type residence permit directly into the passport.

After receiving the permit, you can study long-term and make multiple entries and exits within its validity period.

VI. Validity Period

The validity period of a study-type residence permit is usually determined based on the length of study, commonly including:

  • More than 180 days up to one year;

  • One year;

  • Two years;

  • Three years or longer (determined according to the program’s duration).

Long-term academic programs are typically processed annually and renewed each year.

VII. Renewal and Changes

When any of the following situations occur, promptly handle the relevant procedures:

  • Extension of the study period;

  • Transfer or change of school;

  • Replacement of passport;

  • Imminent expiration of the residence permit;

  • Significant changes to the study program.

It is generally recommended to apply for an extension 30 days before the residence permit expires.

VIII. Important Notes

1. After entering China with an X1 visa, apply for a study-type residence permit within 30 days.

2. Holders of a study-type residence permit may enter and exit China multiple times during its validity period.

3. Do not engage in employment unrelated to your studies without approval.

4. In cases of transfer, suspension, or withdrawal from studies, promptly report to both the school and the immigration authorities.

5. Renew your residence permit in time before it expires to avoid overstaying.
