Guide to Applying for a Chinese Mobile Phone Number
strategy2026/06/02
Only after arriving in China did I realize that a phone without a local SIM card is basically just a “brick”?
Don’t panic! Getting a Chinese mobile number is much easier than pronouncing “thank you (xiè xie)” correctly.
Just follow this guide:
China has three major carriers, all with excellent signal coverage:
- China Mobile: The largest network, but some plans require a Chinese ID card to sign up.
- China Unicom: Usually the most foreigner-friendly (offers English services and a simpler registration process).
- China Telecom: Mixed reviews, but it’s also an option if the other two don’t work for you.
💡 Tip: If you’re only here for a short trip, choosing China Unicom is definitely the safest bet!
No matter which carrier you choose, you’ll need to bring the following:
- Your passport (and your visa must be valid)
- Proof of address (hotel or hostel check-in slip, or a local friend’s residential address)
- Bring yourself🤓 (Yes, really! Staff will take a photo of you on-site for real-name authentication.)
